Every Saturday, I wouldn't take my lunch unless I've watch this cartoon that was shown in RPN 9. This talks about taking care of nature and all living and non-living things. I'm referring to Captain Planet And The Planeteers.
Gaia, the Earth spirit saw that pollution is already destroying the face of the Earth. Because of this, she called five individuals to protect the planet using five elemental rings, namely Earth, Fire, Wind, Water and Heart. Here are the names of the five individuals:
Kwame is the Planeteer in charge of "Earth". Kwame is from Africa. Raised on the savannah, he spent much time working to help keep the land from becoming a desert by planting trees. It was during this activity that he discovered his magic ring. The Earth ring is able to manipulate the ground to create earthquakes, landforms, and craters, though only to a certain extent.
Wheeler is the Planeteer who controls "Fire". From the United States of America. He is somewhat aware of martial arts and other techniques for handling tough situations, primarily from movies and television. With his powers, Wheeler is able to send out projectiles of flame and create small fires nearby; he can also use his power like a laser beam, to cut ropes or melt locks.
Linka is the Planeteer with the power of "Wind". She is from the Russian Federation. Linka is particularly interested in birds, learning to play their songs and sings for them on her keyboard. It happened that a bird attracted by her music was carrying a golden ring with the symbol of wind in its beak. Linka joined the Planeteers as the mistress of winds, able to create powerful gusts, small tornados, and even fly, though the concentration required to levitate is very tiring, and she rarely flies with the exception of emergency situations.
Gi is the Planeteer whose ring allowed her control over "Water". She is of East Asian descent, preferrably Japan. while she was swimming amongst dolphins, she threw a toy hoop to one of them. The dolphin returned the hoop, and fixed to it was a golden ring bearing a blue stone with the symbol of water. Predictably, Gi gains the power of water, enabling her to control water in a telekinetic manner if it is clean enough to be affected by her ring.
Ma-Ti is the Planeteer of "Heart" from South America. Ma-Ti became the Planeteer of Heart, able to communicate with people and animals telepathically and feel and convey emotions directly. Though not powerful in the way of action, Ma-Ti's power was mentioned to be the most important by Gaia in the first episode. It keeps the Planeteers together and helps them to be in tune with nature and the people with whom they interact. Ma-Ti's power can also influence the feelings of others, enabling him to draw aid from creatures in the surrounding area. This is more akin to empathy than mind control; Ma-Ti's powers can only influence behavior by drawing out what kindness already exists in a being's heart; as such, most villainous people are barely influenced by the power, and it has no effect at all over beings of pure evil, such as Zarm. Furthermore, when he is heard telepathically communicating with animals, any call for aid he makes always takes the form of a request, rather than a command. His power can, however, serve to protect him from external psychic manipulation.
When all the powers of the five elemental rings are combined, Captain Planet is formed. When the Planeteers summon him, Captain Planet always declares "With your powers combined - I am Captain Planet!" This emphasized the show's message of cooperation. When trouble has been taken care of, Captain Planet returns to the Earth, reminding the Planeteers that "the power is yours", meaning they have the duty and the ability to continue protecting the environment when he is gone.
Captain Planet's abilities are never clearly defined, allowing him to always have a way of defeating his enemy and solving the problem before him. He can shape-shift and alter his structure to take on the properties of any element. At times, he is able to transmute other elements. He can fly, has great strength, displays telepathic/empathic abilities at times. One criticism against the show was the Captain Planet would spontaneously develop a new ability to take care of different emergencies and never display that ability again. Some saw him as a deus ex machina rather than a character in his own right.
Even if this cartoon will be aired again in any network, I will surely watch it again. It also gives us a lesson, to love nature and take care of it.
